International Mobility and Cooperation through Digitalisation (IMKD)

The DAAD funding programme IMKD supports higher education institutions in accompanying the student journey by innovative digital instruments in teaching and administration.

Digitalisation is a driving force that interconnects social and technological transformation. It continually advances through scientific fields and academic systems, and no institution or region can escape its influence. For universities and their internationalisation processes, this development holds valuable potential for engaging in new forms of exchange and creating corresponding programmes with integrated digital measures. This equally applies to new mobility formats which interweave physical mobility and virtual opportunities for cooperation.

The programme International Mobility and Cooperation through Digitalisation (IMKD), financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), addressed this problem. Between 2020 and 2023, it supported German higher education institutions which see digitalisation as an opportunity to rethink international university partnerships and want to use digital instruments as tools for their own internationalisation strategies. The universities were encouraged to recognise the international "student journey” as the focus of their efforts and to implement digital elements in support of students on this journey.

The funding programme ended in 2023 and will not be recalled. You can find programme results, voices from the projects and an overview of the funded projects in the sections below.

    Documentation of the end-of-programme meeting

On March 30 and 31 2023, we welcomed representatives of all six IMKD projects to the end-of-programme meeting in Bonn. Comprehensive successes were acknowledged and future perspectives of digital internationalisation discussed in various presentation and exchange formats.
